How does Radon impact your health?

Health Risks of Radon

Radon comes from the decay of uranium in soil and rocks. When radon enters buildings, it can build up to dangerous levels, especially in poorly ventilated areas. Here’s how it affects human health:

  • Lung Cancer Risk: Radon is a leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. When radon gas decays, it releases radioactive particles that can be inhaled. These particles damage the cells in the lungs and can lead to cancer over time.

  • Cumulative Exposure: The risk of lung cancer increases with the level of radon exposure and the duration of exposure. Even low levels of radon can pose a risk if exposure is prolonged.

  • Smokers at Higher Risk: For smokers, the risk of lung cancer from radon is much higher. The combination of smoking and radon exposure significantly increases the likelihood of developing lung cancer.
